150 YEARS OF SALE & DISTRICT AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY
In 1859, 150 years ago the Sale and District Agricultural Society, as it is known today, was established. The first Annual Show was held in 1861 and every year after except during World War 2. This year we also celebrate the 146th Annual Show.
The Annual Show Day was always granted as a half or full day holiday for the locals who looked forward to the Show each year. This year, in 2009, we still hope to have as many visitors to enjoy the additional attractions organised for the 150th year even though it is not a public holiday. Over the years the weather has always played an important part and rain or shine the Sale Show has never been cancelled.
Entry classes have covered all areas from animals to plants, traditionally including horse mower and reaper, colonial liquors, milking, butter making, homemade bread through to wood carving, embossed leather work, laundry items and children's school exercise book for drawing and penmanship.
Competitions for ploughing, shearing, wood chopping among others were held and many of these traditions have been carried on to the present day even though society has changed.
Over the years the committee has been an essential part of the Society's success with many generations from several families being active members over the years. Beyond this, locals have always participated voluntarily to ensure the smooth running of the Show each year, and we thank them sincerely for their efforts.
